Fear of Vomiting or seeing Sick?

Updated: Oct 21, 2019

Can you imagine a constant fear of being sick or of seeing others being sick? Sometimes this might be accompanied by a constant feeling of nausea. If you can feel how debilitating this could be, then you have a glimpse of what Emetophobia (fear of vomiting) feels like.

Emetophobia can come out of nowhere and can start to shut down your ability to interact with the outside world, socialise or even function. Slowly the boundaries of the world come closer and closer and you can feel isolated and removed from the rest of the world.

Emetophobia is a condition that is not widely diagnosed even though it is a fairly common anxiety disorder particularly prevalent in teenagers. This is not a simple phobia and it often presents a challenge to professionals to treat. Many experts will say that emetophobia can be attributed as a response from a traumatic event even though may be no memory of such an event. More often emetophobia appears to be a response to worries about a lack of control. This appears quite frequently in teenagers as they start to move from being a child to an adult and they need to test their boundaries. The transition happens at the same time as the physical development and this often seems to cause confusion. As parents or partners we may exacerbate the situation by caring and constantly bringing attention to it- "how are you feeling" might be a caring response but immediately focuses on the problem.

Sometimes even the act of helping can exaggerate the problem and now things are getting worse and worse.

I have worked with many clients with emetophobia and the single most common thread seems to be a deep rooted anxiety and because this is a deeper and more embedded type of response then it can take some time to heal. However with persistence and careful support I have found that a mixture of psychotherapy and hypnotherapy can be remarkable effective in helping clients back to a more rewarding and satisfying life. There are no miracles but sometimes, just sometimes the results can be miraculous. If you or someone you know is suffering from emetophobia then perhaps you should give me a call - 01454 300191 or email peter@thepetersonpractice.co.uk.

If you are looking for hypnotherapy in Bristol or South Glos then the Peterson Practice uses probably the most effective approach. I practice in a multi disciplinary clinic near Yate in BS37 with psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists
